According to the World Bank, 2.24 billion tons of garbage was produced worldwide in 2020. This means that every person has produced 0.79 grams of garbage per day. At the same time, the World Bank believes that at the rate at which the population is increasing, 3.88 billion tons of garbage will be produced in 2050. Many countries around the world are working to recycle garbage. At the same time, different technologies are being used to reduce it in some places. But the problem of garbage still persists.

Today, garbage is a global problem. India generates about 277 billion kilos of garbage every year, which means about 205 kilos of garbage per person. Only 70 percent of this is collected, the rest is spread on land and water. Ghazipur in Delhi and Mulund dumping ground in Mumbai are such areas where huge mountains of garbage have been formed and people also live around them.
Type of garbage
Let us tell you that there are mainly two types of waste. The first is industrial waste and municipal waste. While the responsibility of disposal of industrial waste lies with the industries, the responsibility of municipal waste lies with the local bodies/governments.
Asia’s biggest garbage mountain
Asia’s largest garbage mountain is spread over 70 acres and 65 meters high in Ghazipur, Delhi. About 2000 tons of garbage is dumped here every day. Similar mountains are in Okhla and Bhalswa landfills of Delhi. Apart from this, Bhandewadi dumping yard of Nagpur, Pirana landfill of Ahmedabad, Mandur dumping yard in Bangalore are some such places in India where huge mountains of garbage have been formed.
Litter in the US
Now whether humans live in India or abroad or in space, wherever they live, garbage generation is a common occurrence. The ‘Newton Country Landfill’ in Indiana, USA is spread over 400 acres, in which all the garbage from homes and businesses spread over 480 km (300 miles) is collected here. It is believed that this landfill collects garbage for the next 20 years.
This garbage area located in ‘Puente Hills’ in California is spread over 700 acres and the height of this garbage mountain is 500 meters. Apex Landfill is also one of the largest garbage dumps in America. This landfill is located in North Las Vegas in an area of 2200 acres. About 50 million tons of garbage is lying here, 9 thousand tons of garbage is dumped here every day.
The ‘Fresh Kills’ landfill is located on Staten Island in New York. This place has 150 million tons of garbage. According to a study, every person in America throws an average of 2 kg of garbage every day. 10,000 tons of garbage is dumped every day in Africa’s ‘Olusosun Landfill’, which is Africa’s largest garbage dump. South Korea’s ‘Sudoku Won Landfill’ dumpyard is considered one of the world’s largest garbage dumps. About 20 thousand tons of garbage is dumped here every day.
Brazil
The Jardim Gramacho in Rio de Janeiro was one of the world’s largest landfills, which was closed in 2012 after a 34-year-long struggle.
mexico
This dumpyard of ‘Bordo Poniente’ (Mexico) is even bigger than Sudoku Won (South Korea). Every day 12 thousand tons of garbage is dumped in this dumpyard from Mexico City. ‘Guiyu Waste Dump’ located in southern China is not only the world’s largest garbage dump but also the most dangerous garbage dump. It is also considered the graveyard of electronic garbage.
